Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) is a hormone produced naturally in the body that is responsible for the development of masculine characteristics such as body hair, muscle growth, deep voice and prostate gland. Normally, not 100% of the testosterone in the body is converted into DHT, and most of us don’t have to worry much about DHT levels. However, too much DHT in the body has been linked to hair loss and prostate cancer. You can control DHT levels through diet and lifestyle adjustments. Medications and supplements can also be used to block the production of DHT in the body. [1] X Research Source

Add tomatoes to the sauce. Tomatoes are high in lycopene, a natural DHT inhibitor. Lycopene in cooked tomatoes is absorbed more efficiently than lycopene in raw tomatoes. While a slice of raw tomato sandwiched in bread would also help, a delicious tomato sauce drizzled over noodles is better. [2] X Trusted Source Science Direct Go to Source

  • Carrots, mangoes and watermelons are also good sources of lycopene.

Eat nuts like almonds and cashews. L-lysine and zinc are also food substances that inhibit DHT naturally found in almonds, peanuts, pecans, walnuts and cashews. [3] X Research Sources

  • Incorporating nuts into your daily diet will help lower DHT levels naturally.
  • Zinc is also found in green leafy vegetables, such as kale and spinach. [4] X Research Sources

Drink green tea. Green tea is rich in antioxidants, and helps to slow down or even block the conversion of testosterone into DHT. Other hot drinks like black tea and coffee have a similar effect. [5] X Trusted Source PubMed Central Go to Source

  • For best results, drink organic tea with the leaves on. Avoid processed green tea “waters” that may contain less than 10% tea. You should also avoid adding sugar or artificial sweeteners to your tea.

Eliminate sugar from your diet. Sugar causes inflammation and increases the body’s production of DHT. Too much sugar in your diet takes away the benefits you get from other foods. [6] X Research Sources

  • Avoiding sweet foods, such as cookies and candy, may seem easy enough, but be wary of packaged or processed foods that may contain sugar, even if it’s not very sweet.

Drink caffeine in moderation. A morning cup of coffee can help reduce DHT production. However, consuming too much caffeine can have the opposite effect. Too much caffeine can also lead to hormonal imbalances and dehydration, which are factors that inhibit hair growth. [7] X Research Sources

  • Stay away from sodas that contain caffeine; These drinks also contain sugar and other chemicals that increase DHT production.

Using drugs and functional foods

Take a saw palmetto extract supplement. Dwarf palm extract inherently inhibits the activity of 5-alpha-reductase type II, an enzyme that converts testosterone to DHT. Taking 320 mg of a dietary supplement per day can also stimulate hair growth. [8] X Trusted Source PubMed Central Go to Source

  • Although not as fast-acting as prescription drugs, dwarf palm extract is cheaper and more convenient to take.

Try pumpkin seed oil. Pumpkin seed oil is also a natural DHT inhibitor, although not as effective as dwarf palm extract. Unlike dwarf palm extract, the effectiveness of pumpkin seed oil has been studied mainly in rats rather than in humans. [9] X Trusted Source PubMed Central Go to Source

  • In Germany and the US, pumpkin seed oil is approved as a treatment for prostate disorders. [10] X Research Source
  • You can also eat a handful of pumpkin seeds a day if you want to increase your intake of pumpkin seed oil, although you won’t get as much oil as you would with a pill supplement. Some beneficial properties may be reduced in roasted pumpkin seeds.

Ask your doctor about finasteride. Finasteride, also sold under the trade name Propecia, is a medication approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of hair loss, especially male pattern baldness. You can use it as an injection or a pill. [11] X Research Source

  • Finasteride acts on enzymes that are concentrated in the hair follicles, inhibiting the production of DHT.
  • Finasteride may stop the progression of baldness and help new hair growth in some cases.

Talk to your doctor about minoxidil (Rogaine) 2% topical or oral Finasteride. One consequence of high DHT levels is hair loss on the top of the head. Medications like minoxidil or Finasteride can help reduce hair loss and even stimulate hair growth in some cases. However, you should consult your doctor before starting a new medication to make sure it doesn’t interact with any medications you’re taking or cause other unwanted side effects. [12] X Research Source

  • Some of the possible side effects of these drugs include decreased sex drive, decreased ability to maintain an erection, and decreased ability to ejaculate.

Lifestyle adjustment

Exercise 3-5 days per week. Being overweight and having a sedentary lifestyle increase the risk of prostate cancer. Start a regular exercise program, even if it’s just walking for 20 minutes every two days. [13] X Research Source

  • Add strength exercises to train the muscles. Interval training can be a good option if you don’t have a lot of time to work out.

Schedule time to rest and relax. An imbalance between work and play can increase stress levels, which in turn causes the body to produce more DHT. Spend 15-20 minutes a day doing something you enjoy. [14] X Research Source

  • Choose a relaxing and quiet activity, such as reading, coloring, or jigsaw puzzles.
  • You also need to make sure you get enough sleep. Too little sleep can also increase stress levels and lead to increased DHT levels.

Get a massage to relieve stress. Stress can cause the body to convert more testosterone into DHT. A massage can not only help relieve stress but also stimulate and improve blood circulation, which in turn helps hair growth. [15] X Research Source

  • Try a massage every 2 weeks for 2 months to see if your stress levels improve. .

Give up smoking. In addition to other high health risks for brain lice, smokers also have higher levels of DHT than non-smokers. If you smoke and have high DHT levels, quitting smoking can help your body’s production of DHT return to normal. [16] X Trusted Source PubMed Central Go to Source

    • Because smoking increases levels of DHT and other hormones, it may also increase the risk of prostate cancer (although some studies suggest the opposite). Smoking can actually increase your risk of dying from prostate cancer.
    • Smoking itself causes hair loss, regardless of its effect on DHT levels. [17] X Trusted Source PubMed Central Go to source
  • Advice

    • For best results, choose organic seasonal produce. These foods have the highest nutritional content and do not contain chemicals that can disrupt hormones.
