Build a pond in the yard. The pond is a beautiful decoration for the garden, and also has the effect of attracting dragonflies! Dragonflies often seek out water because they breed in water, and dragonfly larvae hide among aquatic plants. If you want to lure dragonflies to live in, you should create a water source in your yard. Build a lake that is at least 0.6 meters deep, but just wide enough to attract dragonflies. [1] X Research Source

  • The lake needs to be at least 0.6 m deep so that dragonfly larvae can hide from predators such as raccoons.
  • Water sources need to have low, shallow banks. Low slopes create favorable conditions for plants to grow.

Find the right water source. You can find many creative ways to bring water into your garden. If you love landscaping, kick off a big and exciting project by installing a prefabricated pond in your yard, or dig and build your own. [2] X Research Source

  • A pontoon pool placed in the garden can also attract dragonflies to lay eggs. Wooden crates for wine cut in half are also a good idea.
  • You can find prefabricated pools at home decor stores, and inflatable pools at most toy stores or major stores. Both of these are available online.

Determine if your area is close to where dragonflies live. You will easily attract dragonflies if you are lucky to be near a water source where they live. Many dragonflies fly for miles, but the closer your area is to a river, lake or other water source, the more likely you are to attract them. [3] X Research Sources

  • Most areas that are not too arid are located relatively close to a water source with dragonflies.

Plant aquatic plants in the lake. The lake alone will not help you attract dragonflies. You need to plant aquatic plants in the lake to attract dragonflies to fly. Dragonflies love tall trees! They will lay their eggs in the trees, and the dragonfly larvae will live in them until they become adults. They will then take shelter in tall trees. [4] X Research Sources

  • Grow both submerged and floating plants. Dragonflies will live in underwater plants as larvae and perch on tall trees as adults.
  • Try growing eel grass, green arhats, waterweed, weasel tails, water chives, water lilies, and lotus flowers.
  • You can find aquatic plants at aquatic plant stores and online.

Plant bushes around the lake. Arrange bushes around the edge of the lake to give the dragonflies more space to perch. The bushes also help to decorate the lake more beautiful and attractive, and dragonflies will have many places to perch and hide. You can plant common hedge plants and shrubs.

  • For example, you can plant plants like lobelia, seedbox or button bush.
  • You can also let weeds and bushes grow naturally around the lake.

Scatter rocks around the lake. The lake will be even more beautiful with the rocks in and around the lake. Dragonflies also like to perch on warm rocks, especially on flat surfaces. Place rocks in and around the lake to provide plenty of room for dragonflies to perch.

  • You can try a combination of dark and light colored stones. Dragonflies can love either type of rock.

Make sure the lake gets plenty of sun. Dragonflies love the sun, so they will find a lake located in full midday sun instead of a lake under the trees. [5] X Research Sources

Stick some branches in the middle of the lake. While you wait for the tree to grow tall enough, plant branches in the pond to make room for the dragonflies to perch. [6] X Research Sources

  • You can use twigs taken from nearby trees or bamboo trees that are often used to make a trellis for trees and vegetables.

Consider other factors

Avoid releasing fish into the lake. Maybe you want to put fish in the lake to have both fish and dragonflies, but this is actually not a good idea. Fish will eat dragonfly larvae, so dragonflies will not seek out a lake with fish to breed. [7] X Research Sources

Place a fountain in the garden. If you don’t want to build a lake, you can simply install a fountain. Fountains are much less maintenance-intensive. You can buy an aquarium pump at garden supply stores and put it in a trough or pot. [8] X Research Sources

  • Typically, you will need to purchase additional filters for outdoor fountains.

Plant flowers that attract dragonflies in and around the house. Some flowers will attract dragonflies to come. Plant these flowers around a water source, in a flower bed or around the house to attract dragonflies to visit. [9] X Research Source

    • You can try looking at flowers such as blackberry, chrysanthemum, chrysanthemum, cat mint, chrysanthemum bar, hydrangea, sage, marigold.
  • Warning

    • Be aware of invasive plants and do not plant them in the aquarium.
    • Do not mow the grass around the pond for dragonflies.
    • Do not spray herbicides or pesticides around dragonfly habitats. Dragonflies will not use contaminated water, and you may accidentally kill their larvae.
    • Avoid prefabricated pools with no slopes.
