Measure the watch band. Before removing any links, it is essential to estimate how many links you need to remove. To do this:

  • Place the watch on your wrist right where you intend to wear it. [1] X Research Source Once satisfied with the position to wear, rotate the wrist so that the watch face is facing up.
  • With the watch band on the wrist, gather the excess straps on each side together and hold them together to simulate them as if they were cut. Continue recording until it feels right.
  • Remember where the links are gathered on the wrist – beware of links that are designed to be non-removable. The links that you collect are the first to be removed.
  • If it is not possible to accurately estimate the number of eyes to be removed, remove less than you estimate – then it will be easier to remove than have to reattach.
  • We should remove each eye individually rather than multiple eyes. [2] X Research Source This way you can evenly remove the link on each side and ensure the watch face remains centered on the chain. [3] X Research Sources

Prepare all the tools. For the disassembly to be satisfactory, you will need some special tools. Includes: [4] X Research Sources

  • A thin, pointed object such as a spring bar remover or pin pusher.
  • Small nose pliers.
  • Small hammer.
  • Screwdriver.
  • Tray for parts.

Remove the strap. With some metal band watches, you need to remove the strap before cutting the eyes. To do this:

  • Remove the spring bar from the watch band. To correctly locate the spring bar, hold the lock on the left hand side and the spring bar will be on the left side. [3] X Research Sources
  • Use a watch repair tool or pin pusher to press against the spring bar and pry it out of the band.
  • Be careful not to let it fly out of control because you won’t have another to replace it!

Determine the link you will remove. Use the pin ejector bar or spring bar remover to push the link guard out in the direction of the arrow engraved below of the metal link. [3] X Research Sources

  • You need to push the pin out about 2 to 3mm then pull it out with pliers or your hand.
  • Place the connector in the tool tray, you will need it to reattach the bracelet.

Keep an eye out for the small iron pipes. Some watch bands have iron tubes in between the joints that will fall off when you remove the pin. Because they are so small, they can fall on the floor or work area, so be careful. You will need them. [3] X Research Sources

Reassemble the watch band. Once the excess link has been removed you need to install the pin in its replacement position to complete it. Insert the pin in the opposite direction of the arrow.

  • If your strap has a spool, place it between the link you’re assembling and when you close the guard, make sure it aligns with the spool.
  • If needed, you can use a small hammer to tap lightly to lock in place.

Try it on. Your watch should now fit properly if you did it right. If it’s still wide, you can remove a few more eyes.

  • If it’s a little too wide or a little tight, you can adjust the bracelet by inserting the clasp’s spring bar into the other alternate holes for sizing.
  • Keep the extra metal links, pins and tubes carefully, you may need them in the future.

  • Continue to rotate the pin counterclockwise until it gradually loosens.
  • Use tweezers or pliers to pull the pin out before it falls. Keep the screws in a safe place so you can reassemble the watch band.
  • Do this on a table or in a tray so you don’t lose any parts during the process.

Reattach the strap. To reassemble you just need to reverse the above operations.
  • Advice

    • After sizing, the band on the 6 o’clock side of the bracelet (the eyes below the 6 o’clock) should be less than the other side. So when wearing the watch face and buckle will be more balanced.
    • If you have trouble finding details when removing the eyes, a magnifying glass can help you enlarge the watch’s guard, links, and other small parts.

    Attention

    • To avoid scratching the watch band, be careful, slow, and avoid being harsh!
    • You can measure your wrist with a tape measure before cutting the eye of the watch. If you remove too much you will have to reattach it which is more complicated.

    Things you need

    • Spring bar remover, latch pusher
    • 1mm . screwdriver
    • Small nose pliers (smooth tip)
    • A small hammer
    • Tool tray
    • Tape measure
    • Magnifier (optional)
