Create Inspiration

Basic Rules of Thumb

Substitute more specific words for these confusing words where appropriate: “complete,” “skip,” “look at,” “experience,” and “reinforce,” which can help bring to more specific ideas.
- Use the active voice instead of the passive voice, like the rule of thumb.
- Active: “The cat has found its owner”. Here, the cat is in action, so to speak. It actively finds its owner.
- Passive: “The owner was found by his cat”. Here, the cat was much different from the above action. The owner is found; rather than the cat finding out.
- Sometimes, the adjective is redundant. See the following sentence: “I have seen him when he lifted the last pawn, and laid it down, checked the king, and won a successful victory” . What victory is not success? Here, the adjective simply reaffirms what we have said. This adjective does not give any additional information to help the reader understand more about what is happening.
- In other cases, the adjective the writer uses can be quite obscure. “He’s a formidable opponent” is a phrase that is both unfriendly and inappropriate. “Mighty” means formidable, and substituting “powerful” for “mighty” will make the sentence more understandable and acceptable.
- Learn root words. Word roots (especially Latin words in the English language) will help you guess the meaning of unknown words without a dictionary. However, you will not have to worry about this because there are no word roots in Vietnamese.
