How to Find Longitude and Latitude from Google Maps

Besides finding directions and addresses everywhere in the world, with Google Maps, you can also determine the coordinates of any place. Just pick a place and share it with yourself or others and you can do it on iPhone, iPad, Android, and the desktop version of Google Maps. It’s as simple as clicking or tapping on the desired location!

Download and open Google Maps. Go to the App Store (iOS), search for “Google Maps”, and tap the Get/Install button next to the search results to download the app.

Once downloaded, tap it on your phone’s home screen to open the app.

Mark the location you want to find on the map. There are two ways to do this:

Enter the address, location or point you want to find in the search bar and press the “Search” button.
Use your finger to navigate the map’s interface and find your desired location. Long press to mark on the map.

Share location using Messages. Click the “Dropped Pin” tab at the bottom of the screen and select “Share”. Here, you can share using many different methods. However, using “Messages” is currently the fastest way to get the coordinates of the location you have selected. ^{[1] X Research Source}

Download and open Google Maps. Go to the Play Store (Android), search for “Google Maps”, and click the Get/Install button next to the search results to download the app.

Mark the location where you want to find the coordinates. Find that place on the map. Touch and hold until a red mark appears on the map.

View coordinates. Once marked, look at the search bar at the top of the screen. The coordinates of the selected place will appear in the search bar. ^{[4] X Research Sources}

Share the location if you want. Tap the “Dropped Pin” tab at the bottom of your screen. Tap “Share” and select the messaging app you want to use and send the message/email to yourself or others. ^{[5] X Research Sources}

The information shared includes the longitude and latitude of the place you have marked.
Latitude is usually placed before longitude.

Find the address/place you want to locate using Google Maps . Google Maps will open. Depending on your specific search, Google may highlight the exact location or offer some options.

For example, when you search for “Starbucks Seattle”, a map with several possible locations to choose from will appear.
If you don’t have a specific address, zoom in or out on the map to manually locate the place you want to find.

Tick. Click on the exact location of the place where you want to find the coordinates.

After you bookmark, the coordinates of the bookmarked place will appear as part of the URL in the address bar. However, there is a simpler way to get this information.

Instead of marking, you can also right-click directly on the place on the map.

Get coordinates information. The coordinates will be displayed in the rectangular box that appears at the bottom of the computer screen.

Latitude is recorded before longitude.

You can also paste the coordinate pair into the Google Maps search bar. Google will mark the location described with that coordinate.
Understand what longitude and latitude are. The meridian runs from the North Pole to the South Pole and is used to determine your position in the East/West direction. Latitude runs perpendicular to the meridian and is used to determine your position in the North/South direction. Longitude and latitude are measured in degrees (D), minutes (M), and seconds (S). Google Maps displays coordinates in two ways:
- Degrees, Minutes and Seconds: DDD° MM’ SS.S”; 42°13’08.2″N 83°44’00.9″W
- Decimal degrees: DD.DDDDD°; 42.231039°N, 83.733584°W
If your web browser uses Google Maps Lite, you won’t be able to see the longitude and latitude of the place. To determine if you are in Lite mode, look for the lightning bolt icon in the lower right corner of the map or go to the settings menu (☰) and scroll down to see the text: “You” re in Lite mode” (You are in Lite mode) or not. ^{[8] X Research Sources}
