How to Care for a German Shepherd Dog

Keeping German Shepherd Dogs Cool. This breed, especially the long-haired breed, gets very hot. If you have a long-haired dog in a tropical climate, you should provide plenty of water and shade when they are outdoors, and not be too demanding on the dog on hot days.

Skill training for German Shepherds. Not only will this make the German Shepherd good behavior and easy to care for, but you and the dog will bond together if you take the time to train them. When the bond deepens, the German Shepherd will obey orders and readily consider you their master.

Note that the German Shepherd is a large breed. You need to create a comfortable space for them. German Shepherds are very active and love to play. They need space to run around. You should clean the yard and make sure the dog is safe. If you don’t have a large yard, take your dog to the park every day, or make use of a suitable space near your home. German Shepherds can also get along with other dogs.

Feed the German Shepherd dog appropriately. Feed the dog twice a day with the right amount of food. Do not feed them too little/too much. You should choose a quality food that does not use corn for protein. Dogs drink a lot of water. You need to prepare a full bowl of water and keep it in an easy-to-find place. Check the water bowl several times a day so your pet is always drinking clean water.

Bathe your dog if necessary, but do not bathe regularly as this can affect the skin as well as the natural oils in the coat. You can bathe them yourself or take them to a hygienist.

Take your pet to the vet. Here are some reasons:

• • Health Checkup – Your veterinarian can check your dog’s general health and give regular vaccinations.
  • Bathing – Your veterinarian will bathe your dog to eliminate odors and check for conditions such as ear infections.
  • Nail Care – When the nails grow long, the dog will feel pain when moving. You should take them to the vet for trimming.
  • Deworming/parasite testing – Every dog should be dewormed monthly to avoid worm infestation. Pets need to be tested for parasites first, then your veterinarian will prescribe a monthly medication. If your dog is already infected with worms, your veterinarian will prescribe medication to treat it.
  • Old age – This particular breed can suffer from many diseases as it gets older, especially osteoarthritis. If your dog has difficulty walking, you should take him to the vet for medication or therapy or surgery in severe cases.

Dog training. Dogs need exercise to develop muscle and energy. Therefore, you should give your pet daily exercise by playing a game of throwing objects, going for long walks or runs, or even chasing pets around the house. The German Shepherd without proper training will suffer from joint problems such as hip and elbow development, as well as become irritable. Note that too much exercise when the dog is young can cause them to develop abnormally.
