K-pop singers before becoming stars all spent time as trainees. K-pop trainees live, practice and perform together from a very young age. Some trainees start at 11 years old, but many are only discovered and joined a company when approaching the age of 20, so don’t be disappointed if you are already a bit old! Many K-pop trainees and idols are Korean, but not necessarily Korean – people of all ethnicities and races can participate. Your skills and personality greatly influence your future success, and equally important is your willingness to work hard.

Take dance classes to become a better and more versatile dancer. Especially if you haven’t practiced dancing much, find as many different classes as possible. Focus on hip hop and contemporary dance genres. An important requirement of a trainee (hopefully becoming an idol!) is excellent performance, which includes dancing. [1] X Research Source

  • If you can’t take real dance classes, you can learn new skills over the internet.

Find a vocal coach to practice singing . Even if you’re a great singer, you can still learn something from the coach. If not, they can at least give you tips on how to increase endurance while performing. [2] X Research Source

  • If your main skill is dancing, that’s okay too! But good singing skills will increase your chances of being noticed in the auditions.

Hone your rapping skills to perfect your skill set. Rap is an important part of the K-pop style, and it’s fun too! Listen to a lot of rap music to get an idea of the rhythm and start imitating your favorite artists. [3] X Research Sources

  • If you have trouble reading words, practice saying “tongue twist” phrases to keep your lips flexible.

Practice composing music and perfecting popular songs. When participating in the audition, you will need to perform songs that the producers already know, but as a trainee, you will have to compose and choreograph your own performance of the song. Try to sharpen both of these aspects of the performer. [4] X Research Sources

  • Take a songwriting class if you can afford it, spend a lot of time listening to K-pop music and watching videos so you can start imitating popular styles.

Develop new habits

Familiarize yourself with Korean cultural norms and beauty standards. Although many companies accept non-Korean interns, you will still be catering to a large portion of the Korean audience. Understanding Korean culture is essential if you are not familiar. Research popular K-pop groups, spend time on Korean fashion websites, and read up on Korean social norms and etiquette. [5] X Research Sources

Learn to speak Korean if you are new to the language. At the very least, you need to know basic phrases like “Hello”, “Goodbye”, “Please” and “Thank you”, but the more you know, the better! You will have to sing in Korean at least at some point if you become a trainee, and if you know the language, you can make friends and travel in Korea. [6] X Research Sources

Avoid scandals and be careful what you put on social media. An important factor in being a successful K-pop trainee is having proper manners and behavior. Try to stay away from situations where you could get in, such as going to a party with underage drinkers. And be careful when posting on social media. Managers and moderators will usually view your accounts. [7] X Research Sources

Create a YouTube channel to upload videos and attract followers. Start recording your songs and covers. [8] X Research Sources

  • Schedule posts so you regularly add new content to your channel and look for different ways to grow your audience.

Maintain a healthy weight and stay in shape . Some companies are looking for very slim candidates, others are willing to accept fuller interns. However, regardless of your physique, you must ensure that you meet the strict physical requirements, such as having to practice dancing for many hours a day. [9] X Research Source

  • If you’re out of shape or want to lose weight, incorporate daily exercise into your routine and try to eat more whole foods instead of processed foods.

Search for the company you want to apply for. Some of the big K-pop companies are SM, JYP, YG, Cube, LOEN, Pledis, Wopim, and BigHit. Some companies focus on finding trainees who meet the criteria of appearance and already have singing and dancing skills, while others are not afraid to accept candidates whose appearance is slightly different from the norm and needs to be recognized. further training in a particular field. [10] X Research Source

Show proficiency and confidence when taking the exam. Most K-pop trainees are good at one of the skills of singing, dancing, or rapping. You need to have one skill that stands out and knows all the others. For example, if your main skill is dancing, take dance classes and hone your dancing skills, but don’t forget to practice singing and rapping as well. [11] X Research Source

Prepare 3 songs for the audition, one of them must be a Korean song. Think about where your talent shines and choose songs that showcase that ability. For example, if you are good at dancing and rapping, choose a Korean song that can help you show off your rapping and dancing skills, choose another song to represent a different dance genre, then choose a songs you really love – the producers will get a chance to see your skill and passion! Wear casual clothes and light makeup to the audition. The judges will want to see your true face and body without excessive make-up or revealing outfits (such as Spanx). K-pop trainees live in a world run by companies. They will choose your outfit and make-up and hairstyle for you when performing in public. [14] X Research Source

  • Avoid wearing K-pop fan outfits – producers might think you’re going to auditions just to meet your idols.

Take the exam in person or register for the exam online if you are abroad. There are tons of live auditions all over the world, and you’ll have a good chance of finding one in the country you live in. If you can’t participate in the live audition (or even if you can, but want to sign up for more performances), you can search for online audition forums on companies’ websites. [15] X Research Source

  • Online auditions are a great option for candidates looking for opportunities to become interns! Face-to-face auditions are also great opportunities and experiences, but don’t underestimate the possibility of being discovered through an online audition.

Be patient – it can take a long time to get accepted as an intern! Many trainees had to audition time and time again to be selected. If you get feedback from a contest, notice improvement in the following contest. For example, if the examiner says you need more vocal training, find a vocal coach to help you hone this skill. [16] X Research Source

  • Don’t worry if you’re an adult and still haven’t been accepted as a trainee. Many K-pop idols don’t enter the company until they are nearly 20 years old. Keep honing your skills and taking auditions.

Live the life of a trainee

Understand that it may be difficult for you to make friends if you are a foreigner. Trainees often sign multi-year contracts and spend up to 18 hours a day living with other trainees. If you don’t speak Korean or are unfamiliar with Korean culture, it may take some time for you to make friends and feel included. [17] X Research Source

  • Try and communicate well with others, especially if you still have a language barrier. And don’t forget to be friendly with others – this is helpful when you’re away from home, trying to succeed and making friends.

Read the contract carefully before committing to a company. Being a K-pop trainee is a long-term commitment! Depending on your age, some companies even ask you to sign a contract for up to 5-6 years. Be sure to read every word of the contract carefully. If you do not know Korean, you need to hire a lawyer to review the information in small print in the contract for you. [18] X Research Sources

  • Many companies force you to refund your wages if you break your contract. Some companies do not cover emergencies or health problems. Don’t sign anything if you don’t understand it.

Take care of yourself to meet the rigorous training schedule. Many interns work from 5-6 am until midnight or 1 am. In addition to training, you may have to complete your high school program or practice more on your own. [19] X Research Source

  • Companies often set a timetable for interns without prior discussion.
  • Trainees often don’t get the recommended amount of sleep and often don’t get their usual meals.

Prepare for monthly assessment tests. The company regularly recruits new trainees, so all must be evaluated monthly to make sure the rookies are up to standard. This can be a stressful time each month, as you could be disqualified if you don’t perform well. [20] X Research Source

    • Usually about 20-30 trainees are trained in the company each batch, so you will often have to compete with other students to keep your place.
  • Advice

    • Be polite to everyone at the audition. You can’t tell who’s watching you!
    • See what other K-pop idols and trainees have to say about companies they’ve worked with – it can tell you a lot about that company to decide which one to choose.
    • Prepare yourself for anything that could happen, good or bad. For example, if your voice breaks during an audition, keep singing instead of hesitating or pausing.
    • Do not bring any K-pop band items. It will make you look like you just came to meet your idol.

    Warning

    • If you’re not in Korea and become a trainee, you might have to move there to get into the industry, so think twice about whether that’s what you want in life or in your family. Can your family support you?
