This is an article that shows you how to create icons for shortcuts on Windows computers. Desktop shortcuts often have icons built in, but you can still create your own using an online converter. If you want to create a simple black and white icon yourself, use Microsoft Paint.

Click the Upload option in the middle of the ICO Convert window. Your photo will show up on the page in a few seconds.

Crop photo. Click and drag the mouse over the image area that you want to use as the icon.

  • The selected image area is always square.
  • You can move the entire selected part of the image by clicking and dragging in the center of the image, or you can zoom in or out of the selected part by clicking and dragging one of the corners.

Scroll down and click the Select None link below the image. This is an operation that does not select the shape of the icon to avoid incompatibility on some computers.

Make sure you are using the ICO format. Scroll down and check the box “ICO for Windows 7, Windows 8, Vista and XP” (ICO for Windows 7, Windows 8, Vista and XP).

Click Download your icon(s) . When you see this option displayed at the bottom of the page, you will click it to download the icon file to your computer. After the download is complete, you can continue to set the icon for the shortcut.

  • It is better to save the icon file in a folder that is not easily deleted or moved (such as the Pictures folder) before setting the icon for the shortcut.

Find out the disadvantage of this method. Although you can use Paint to create basic icons, the icon’s visibility will be affected; This means some colors will not be visible on the icon. For best results, you should choose white and black to create icons for Windows using Paint.

  • If you want to create a more sophisticated icon, you can draw the icon with Paint and save it as a JPG file and then use ICO Convert to create the icon.

Open Paint. This is a program available on any Windows computer; You can use Paint to create a simple Windows icon. The operation to open Paint is as follows:

Convert the drawing page to icon size. At the Home tab, you will perform the following steps:

  • Click Resize
  • Tick the “Pixels” box
  • Uncheck the “Maintain aspect ratio” box
  • Type 32 in the “Horizontal” and “Vertical” boxes to create a 32×32 drawing page.
    • The 96×96 size is also a popular choice.
  • Click OK

Draw icons. Once the drawing page has the right size and proportions, you can freely draw the icon to your liking.

  • Graphic design experts recommend creating icons that are simple, stand out, and easy to read. Remember that your icons will be smaller when displayed on the computer screen; so don’t add too much text or small details. [1] X Research Source
  • Maybe you need to resize the brush you’re using. You can do this by clicking on the list of horizontal lines above the Home tab and selecting a thinner line from the list that appears.
  • Drawing icons with the mouse can be difficult and inefficient. If possible, you should use the artboard to create the icon.

Enter the name and suffix “.ico”. In the “File name” field near the bottom of the window, you’ll give the icon file any name and add the .ico extension so that the file is saved as an icon.

Select the save folder. You will choose a folder on the left side of the window to save the icon file (such as Pictures ).

  • It is better to save the icon file in a folder that is not easily moved or deleted, because moving or deleting the icon file will cause the shortcut to use that file to lose the icon.

Save icon. Click Save in the lower-right corner of the window, and then click OK in the window that appears. Your icon will be saved to the selected folder. Now you are free to set the icon.

Learn where you can use icons. Any shortcut can insert an icon. The shortcut associated with the EXE file is usually displayed on the desktop, but you can set an icon for any shortcut.

  • The only exception applies to the “This PC” icon on the desktop. Although you can create a shortcut to “This PC” and edit the icon, you cannot edit the “This PC” icon on the desktop.
  • If there is no shortcut for a certain program, you can create your own before continuing.
