How to Install Minecraft Forge

This wikiHow teaches you how to install Minecraft Forge on a Windows or Mac computer. Forge allows you to create and load (mod) mods for the game Minecraft.

Make sure you have Minecraft installed. To install Forge, you need to install Minecraft and run it at least once. This helps to ensure that all necessary files are in place.

If you intend to create a Forge server, you do not need to install the official Minecraft game or server software because the Forge installation kit includes the entire server file.

Go to the homepage of Minecraft Forge. Visit https://files.minecraftforge.net/ with a web browser and you will be directed to the download page for the latest version of Minecraft Forge.

Click the Installer button located on the right side of your computer. This button may be located in different locations depending on the operating system:

For Windows – Click the large Windows Installer button to the left of the “Changelog” box (change list) under the “Download Recommended” section at the top of the page.
For Mac – Click the little Installer button that looks like a box to the right of the “Changelog” box under the “Download Recommended” section at the top of the page.

Click Skip (skip). This button is located in the upper right corner of the page. Note that you have to wait 6 seconds for this button to appear. This step helps to download the Forge file.

You may have to select a save location (eg Desktop) or confirm that you want to download the file before the download can begin.

Install on Windows

Double-click the Forge icon. This icon has a dark blue background and a white anvil inside. This opens the Forge installer.

If you see a dialog box prompting you to install Java, you will be directed to https://www.java.com/en/download/ in your browser. You need to click Free Java Download (download Java for free), click Agree and Start Free Download (agree and start the free download) and then proceed to install Java after the download is complete.

Make sure the “Install client” box is checked. If the box is not checked, you need to click on the box or circle next to “Install client” before proceeding to the next steps.

Click OK . This button is located in the lower right corner of the page. This installs folders and files for Minecraft Forge.

You can change the save location by clicking … then selecting a new folder.

Double-click the Forge file. This file has the shape of a coffee cup and the extension is .jar.

Click Security & Privacy . This icon has a picture of a house in the top row of the System Preferences menu.

Click the padlock icon. This button is located in the lower left corner of the window.

You will likely have to enter your admin password before continuing.

Click Open Anyway . This button is next to the Forge file name, usually something like “forge-1.12-14.21.1.2387-installer.jar”.

If the Security & Privacy section doesn’t show this option, you need to click the General tab at the top of the page.

Click Open when prompted. This will open the Minecraft Forge installation window.

Make sure the “Install client” box is checked. If not checked, you must click the box or circle next to “Install client” before proceeding to the next steps.

If prompted to install Java, you need to first click More Info… on the window that appears, click Download under Java, click on the Java .dmg file, double click on the Java .pkg folder, then follow the on-screen instructions.

You can change the location of the save folder by clicking … above OK and then selecting a new folder.

Install on Linux

Click OK . Launch the installer you just downloaded with Java and make sure “Install client” is selected.

You can also change the installation path.

Click OK . After the installation has completed, you will see a window appear with this message.

Advice

If you want to use Forge in Minecraft, you need to select Forge from the Profile section on the Minecraft launch page.
Many mods have added spaces that are not compatible with other mods. You can fix this problem by changing “dimension id”.

Warning

Because many mods have issues, it can cause instability or sudden game exits. If this happens, simply remove the edit from the Mods folder and relaunch the Minecraft game.
