Square meter is an area measurement, often used to measure flat surfaces such as football fields or floors. For example, you measure the bed frame in square meters, then measure the area of the room in square meters to see if it fits. If you only have a ruler or tape measure that divides feet or non-meter units, you can still use it to calculate area, and then convert to square meters.

Choose a ruler with meter divisions. Choose a ruler or tape measure that is divided into meters (m) or centimeters (cm). These tools will make it easier for you to calculate in square meters, because they are designed according to the same measurement system.

  • If you can only find rulers that are in feet (ft) or inches (in), then just use them to measure, then see the section to convert units to square meters.

Measure the length of the area. A square meter is a unit of measurement for the area, or size, of a two-dimensional object such as a football field or floor. Use measuring tools to measure one side of an object, from one corner to the other. Record the measured results.

  • If the object is longer than 1 meter, be sure to include both meters and centimeters of the measurement. For example, “2 meters 35 centimeters”.
  • If you want to measure the area of an object that is not a square or a rectangle, read the Polygon section.

{“smallUrl”:”https://www.wikihow.com/images_en/thumb/8/86/Calculate-Square-Meters-Step-3-Version-3.jpg/v4-728px-Calculate-Square-Meters- Step-3-Version-3.jpg”,”bigUrl”:”https://www.wikihow.com/images/thumb/8/86/Calculate-Square-Meters-Step-3-Version-3.jpg/ v4-728px-Calculate-Square-Meters-Step-3-Version-3.jpg”,”smallWidth”:460,”smallHeight”:345,”bigWidth”:728,”bigHeight”:546,”licensing”:” <div class=”mw-parser-output”></div>”}
If it is not possible to measure the entire length in one measurement, divide it into several times. Measure out with a ruler, then place a pebble or something down at an exact spot that’s easy to remember (like a 1-meter or 25-centimeter marker). Retract the ruler and continue measuring, starting at the marker. Repeat until you have measured the entire length, and add up all the results.

{“smallUrl”:”https://www.wikihow.com/images_en/thumb/9/98/Calculate-Square-Meters-Step-4-Version-3.jpg/v4-728px-Calculate-Square-Meters- Step-4-Version-3.jpg”,”bigUrl”:”https://www.wikihow.com/images/thumb/9/98/Calculate-Square-Meters-Step-4-Version-3.jpg/ v4-728px-Calculate-Square-Meters-Step-4-Version-3.jpg”,”smallWidth”:460,”smallHeight”:345,”bigWidth”:728,”bigHeight”:546,”licensing”:” <div class=”mw-parser-output”></div>”}
Measure width. Use the measuring tool you used in the previous step to measure the width of the same area or object. The width you measure in this step should match the length you just measured at a 90º angle, like two adjacent sides of a square. Write down the measured results.

  • Unless the object you are measuring is much less than 1m long, you can round to the nearest centimeter when measuring. For example, if the width is slightly longer than 1 m 8 cm, take 1 m 8 cm as the measurement without using decimals or millimeters (mm).

Convert from centimeters to meters. Usually, the measurement is not round in meters. Instead, you will get a result containing both meters and centimeters, for example 2 m 35 cm . Since 1 cm = 0.01 m, we can convert centimeters to meters by moving the decimal point 2 digits to the left. Here is an example:

  • 35 cm = 0.35 m, so 2 m 35 cm = 2 m + 0.35 m = 2.35 m
  • 8 cm = 0.08 m, so 1 m 8 cm = 1.08 m

{“smallUrl”:”https://www.wikihow.com/images_en/thumb/d/d6/Calculate-Square-Meters-Step-6-Version-2.jpg/v4-728px-Calculate-Square-Meters- Step-6-Version-2.jpg”,”bigUrl”:”https://www.wikihow.com/images/thumb/d/d6/Calculate-Square-Meters-Step-6-Version-2.jpg/ v4-728px-Calculate-Square-Meters-Step-6-Version-2.jpg”,”smallWidth”:460,”smallHeight”:345,”bigWidth”:728,”bigHeight”:546,”licensing”:” <div class=”mw-parser-output”></div>”}
Multiply the length by the width. Once both measurements have been converted to meters, multiply them together to get the area measurement in square meters. Use a computer if needed. For example:

  • 2.35m x 1.08m = 2,538 square meters (m 2 ).

{“smallUrl”:”https://www.wikihow.com/images_en/thumb/e/e1/Calculate-Square-Meters-Step-7-Version-2.jpg/v4-728px-Calculate-Square-Meters- Step-7-Version-2.jpg”,”bigUrl”:”https://www.wikihow.com/images/thumb/e/e1/Calculate-Square-Meters-Step-7-Version-2.jpg/ v4-728px-Calculate-Square-Meters-Step-7-Version-2.jpg”,”smallWidth”:460,”smallHeight”:345,”bigWidth”:728,”bigHeight”:546,”licensing”:” <div class=”mw-parser-output”></div>”}
Round the result. If you have a long decimal result, say 2,538 square metres, you’ll probably want to round it to a number with fewer digits, say 2.54 square metres . In fact, since your measurement is not accurate down to the smallest unit of a meter, the last digit is incorrect anyway. In most of these cases, you can round the number to the nearest centimeter (0.01 m). For a more accurate measurement, learn to round to a certain number.

  • Whenever you multiply two numbers with the same unit of measure (for example, meters), the answer is always in the form of squared units (m 2 , or square meters).

Multiply square feet by 0.093 . Measure the length and width and multiply them together to get the result in square feet. Since 1 square foot = 0.093 square meters, multiply the result you just got by 0.093 to get the answer in square meters. Square meters are larger than square feet, so the number will be smaller for the same area.

  • To be even more precise, multiply by 0.092903.

Multiply the square by 0.84 . If there are measurements in square meters, multiply by 0.84 to get the answer in square meters.

  • To be even more precise, multiply by 0.83613.

Convert square miles to square kilometers instead of square meters. A square mile is very large, much wider than a square meter, so we convert it to square kilometers instead. Multiply the result by 2.6 to get the area in square kilometers. (Or multiply by 2.59 for a more precise result.)

  • If you really want to convert to square meters, then 1 square kilometer = 1,000,000 square meters.

Convert square meters to another unit of area, not length. The square meter is a unit of measurement for areas , or two-dimensional surfaces. Comparing them to units of length or a distance doesn’t say anything. You can change from “square meter” to “square foot”, but not between “square meter” and “feet”.

  • Do not use the calculations in this section to apply conversions to length units. Because we need other numbers.

Cut the shape into several parts. If you’re solving math problems, add more lines to the shape to divide them into simpler shapes, like rectangles or triangles. If you are measuring a room or other object, first draw an area diagram, then do the same as above. Measure each part and write in the diagram. Follow the instructions below to calculate the area of each part, then add all the results together.

Calculate right triangles in the same way, then divide by 2. A right triangle, because it has a 90º angle like a square, will have a very easy area to calculate. Measure the 2 sides of the right angle (length and width), multiply them, then divide the result by 2 to get the result in square meters.

  • This method works because the right triangle is a rectangle cut in half. You basically worked out the area of a rectangle as usual, then divided by 2 to get the area of the triangle.

{“smallUrl”:”https://www.wikihow.com/images_en/thumb/b/b1/Calculate-Square-Meters-Step-16-Version-2.jpg/v4-728px-Calculate-Square-Meters- Step-16-Version-2.jpg”,”bigUrl”:”https://www.wikihow.com/images/thumb/b/b1/Calculate-Square-Meters-Step-16-Version-2.jpg/ v4-728px-Calculate-Square-Meters-Step-16-Version-2.jpg”,”smallWidth”:460,”smallHeight”:345,”bigWidth”:728,”bigHeight”:546,”licensing”:” <div class=”mw-parser-output”></div>”}
Turn other triangles into right triangles, then measure them. Draw a line from any angle of the triangle down to the opposite side, so that the two lines meet at a 90º angle (Draw an angle of the square). [1] X Research Source You have just divided the old triangle into 2 parts, each part is a right triangle. See the instructions above for how to calculate the area of a right triangle; Measure the area of each little right triangle and add up the results.

    Calculate the area of a circle. The area of a circle is π.r 2 , where r is the radius, or distance from the center to a point on the circle or circumference. Measure this distance, multiply the result by itself, then multiply the result obtained by the number π in the calculator. If there is no calculator with built-in , use 3.14 (or 3.1416 if high precision is required).

    • If you’re not sure where the center is, ask a friend to hold one end of the ruler and walk around the edge of the circle. Hold the other end of the ruler and adjust your position until the measurement does not change when the friend moves around the edge of the circle.
    • More complex curves require a more advanced calculation method to be calculated. If you’re just measuring the room for practice purposes, it’s easier to estimate the area by treating curved surfaces as a set of straight lines.
  • Advice

    • Say “5 square meters” instead of “5 square meters”. Basically both ways are correct, but the second is often misunderstood as the area of a figure 5 meters long and 5 meters wide (meaning the area of the figure is 25 square meters, or 5×5). [2] X Research Source
    • If you’re not sure if your calculation is correct, check your answer with the following ballpark measurements:
      • An American football field has an area of about 5,400 square meters.
      • The football association football field measures between 4,000 and 11,000 square meters. [3] X Research Sources
      • A large mattress is about 5 square meters in size. [4] X Research Sources
