Calculate the height of the tree using the results you recorded. The length of an object’s shadow is proportional to its length. In other words, dividing (your height) by (your shadow length) is equal to (the height of the tree) divided by (the length of the tree’s shadow). We can use this equation to find the height of the tree:

  • Multiply the tree’s shadow length by your height. If you are 1.5 m tall, and the tree’s shadow is 30.48 m long, multiply these two numbers together: 1.5 x 30.48 = 45.72).
  • Divide the result by your ball length. With the example above, if your shadow is 2.4 m long, doing the division calculation gives us: 45.72 / 2.4 = 19.05 m).

Close one eye and tilt the pen up or down so you can see the tip of the pencil coincide with the top of the tree. The easiest way is to turn the pointed end of the pencil upwards. The tip of the pen will cover the top of the tree when you look at the tree “through” the pencil.

If you have a ruler, measure the distance between the helper and the tree. Have them stand in place or mark the spot with a stone or stick. Use a ruler to measure the distance between the marked point and the stump. The distance between your friend and the tree is the height of that tree.
If you don’t have a ruler, mark the height of your friend and the tree on a pencil. Draw a line on the pencil where your thumb nail touches; that is the height of the tree as seen through the pencil. Similarly, use a pencil to measure your friend’s height with the tip of the pencil matching your head and the part of your thumb pointing at their feet. Draw a line at the location of the thumb.
Calculate the result when there is a measure. You need to measure the length of each line on the pencil and the height of your friend, which you can do at home without having to go back to the tree. Calculate the ratio of the difference in the length of the lines on the pencil to your friend’s height. For example, if the line on the pencil measures your friend’s height is 5 cm and the line measures the height of the tree as 17.5 cm, the height of the tree will be 3.5 times your friend’s height because (17.5 cm / 5 cm = 3.5). If your friend is 180 cm tall, the tree will be: 180 cm x 3.5 = 630 cm (or 6.3 m).

Measure the distance to the aiming position.
