Preparing Pineapple for Planting

Buy a fresh pineapple. Choose fruit with hard, green leaves that haven’t turned yellow or brown. The skin of the pineapple should be golden brown and hard to the touch. Smell the pineapple to see if it’s ripe: it should give off a sweet, pungent aroma that shows you’ve picked the right pineapple at the right time to start growing a new pineapple plant.

Make sure the pineapple is ripe. It needs to ripen before it can grow a new plant.

You should plant two pineapples in case one of them doesn’t grow well. That way, you’ll have more chances to plant the tree to fruition.
To encourage flowering, place the plant in a bag with two ripe apple halves cut in half. The ethylene gas released from the apple can stimulate the bloom process.
In order for the pineapple to reach its maximum size, the tree will need to be about 1 meter wide and 1 meter high. Unless you take special care to get to this size, don’t be surprised if the pineapple you grow isn’t as big as the supermarket one.
Be very careful if using wild pineapple. The sap from the green pineapple plant contains extremely powerful enzymes and can irritate your skin.
