This wikiHow teaches you how to open an XPS file on a Windows or Mac computer. The XPS file is the Windows version of the more popular PDF format. Although Windows computers have a built-in program that allows them to open XPS files, Mac users still have to convert XPS files to PDF format first before they can view the contents.

Add XPS Viewer to the computer if necessary. XPS Viewer is installed on your Windows 10 computer by default, but you’ll need to reinstall it if you’ve previously removed optional computer features:

  • Open Start

  • Click Apps and click the Manage optional features link.
  • Click Add a feature at the top of the page.
  • Find and click XPS Viewer , then click Install .
  • Restart the computer after XPS Viewer has finished installing.

Find the XPS document. Go to the folder containing the XPS document you want to open.

Double-click the XPS document. The document will begin to open on your computer’s XPS Viewer application.

Wait for the document to open. It may take a few seconds depending on the document size. Once the document has loaded, you’ll be able to view it in the XPS Viewer window.

Open XPS Viewer. You can open the program to view XPS documents by:

  • Open Start

  • Enter xps viewer .
  • Click XPS Viewer in the list of results that appear.

Click File . Options are at the top of the XPS window. A menu will drop down.

Click Open . This is the first option at the top of the drop-down menu. A new file explorer window will open for you to select the XPS file to view.

Select the XPS file and click Open . Select the folder containing the XPS file on the left side of the File Explorer window (such as *Documents* or *Downloads*) and click the XPS file to select it. Then, click the Open button in the lower right corner of the File Explorer window to open the XPS file on the XPS Viewer.

Open the XPS to PDF website. Go to https://xptopdf.com/ using a web browser on your computer. Although XPS cannot be opened on Mac if you have not purchased the software, we can convert XPS files to PDF format and open it with the default PDF viewer on Mac.

  • The XPS file is not different from the PDF format in terms of appearance.

Click UPLOAD FILES (Upload File). This little button is in the middle of the page. A Finder window will open.

Select the XPS file. Go to the folder containing the XPS file you want to open, then click the file to select it.

Click Choose . This blue button is in the lower-right corner of the window. The XPS file will be uploaded to the XPS to PDF website.

Click DOWNLOAD (Download). This yellow button displays below the XPS document name in the middle of the page after the file is converted. When you click that, the PDF file will start downloading.

  • You may be prompted to confirm or select a save location before the PDF file starts downloading.
