Temporarily apply adhesive tape to keep the crack in the nail closed. Cut a piece of clear tape, wide enough to cover the entire crack. Press the edges of the crack together with your fingers and apply the tape directly to the crack, then cut off the excess. [1] X Research Source

  • This method is most effective when the crack in the foundation has not yet penetrated the foundation. More severe cracks require additional first aid steps.
  • This solution is only suitable if your toenails crack while working or going somewhere. However, this is not a long-term solution. You need to treat a cracked toenail at home or visit a professional as soon as possible.

File the crack. If the nail damage has not yet penetrated the foundation, you can file the crack. For best results, use a clean file in the direction of the crack. If it is a longitudinal crack, file in one direction to avoid further cracking. Point the file just a little below the crack to make the nail smooth and even. [2] X Research Source

  • Nails that are still dry when filed can further crack. To avoid further damage, soak your nails in warm water for 5-10 minutes before filing.
Seal the crack with glue. If the crack does not reach the foundation, you can also use glue to fix it. Apply a bit of nail glue along the length of the crack and use an orange stick to press the edges of the crack together until the glue dries. The waiting time is usually no more than 2 minutes. [3] X Research Sources

  • Once the crack is dry, dip the tip of a cotton swab into the nail polish remover solution to remove the glue from the skin around the nail.
  • After the glue dries, you can apply a coat of nail polish to seal the crack and even out the nail color.

Use paper tea bags. Cut a piece of paper from the tea bag. Apply primer or polish on the nails and wait 30 seconds until only the adhesive remains. Cover the entire crack with a piece of tea bag paper and smooth it down so it doesn’t wrinkle or swell. [4] X Research Sources

  • Cut the piece of paper to fit the nail shape and file it to match the nail. Remember to file in the direction of the crack. Nails can suffer further damage if you file in the wrong direction of the crack.
  • Next, apply another coat of glossy paint to hide the paper.

Trim the cracked nail when the crack has been pushed beyond the tip of the toe. Once the entire length of the crack has grown past the tip of the toe, you can safely cut it off. Using nail scissors, carefully cut just below the crack, then file smooth, moving the file in one direction to avoid breaking the nail or creating new cracks.

Keep nails clean. You need to wash your nails and the skin around them regularly with warm water and mild soap, especially if the nail has a crack in the middle or at the base of the nail. Place the injured nail under a slow stream of water to avoid discomfort. Be careful, don’t use hot water or press hard, and don’t use a nail towel – don’t get the towel into the crack in the nail and pull it up. [5] X Research Sources

  • You can also soak your nails in water daily for about 15 minutes to provide moisture to the nails.

Perform first aid. If the crack spreads down to the foundation or causes bleeding, inflammation, or severe pain, take first aid. Wrap the nail in a layer of gauze and press down until the bleeding stops. Once the bleeding has stopped, you can apply Neosporin antibiotic ointment to the painful area and cover it. [6] X Research Sources

  • You should not treat serious cracks the same way as light cracks. Severe cases of nail cracking are not just a cosmetic issue; You need to take care of cracks and damaged tissues.

Seek medical attention if the bleeding does not stop or does not ease the pain. If the bleeding doesn’t stop or gets worse after several minutes of continuous pressure, or if the area around the nail is so painful that you can’t walk, get medical attention right away. There may be damage to the skin, bones and/or nerves below the nail. [7] X Trusted Source University of Wisconsin Health Go to Source

Do not touch the nail. You will want to cut, poke, and even pull the nail out, but it’s best to leave it alone until the crack grows past the foundation. Cover the painful area while the wound has not yet healed and apply an antibiotic cream daily. [9] X Research Source

  • If the cracked nail gets caught in socks, carpeting, or other objects, ask your doctor to trim the nail.

Take over-the-counter pain relievers. If your toenail continues to hurt, you can take over-the-counter pain relievers like aspirin or ibuprofen to reduce pain and inflammation. Use the correct dosage instructions on the label and be sure to check with your doctor before starting a new course of pain relief. [10] X Research Source

  • Do not give aspirin to a child or teenager. Instead, give your child acetaminophen or ibuprofen. [11] X Trusted Source MedlinePlus Go to Source

Trim the nail when the entire crack has grown out. When the entire length of the crack has grown out of the tip of the toe, you can cut off the cracked nail. Use nail scissors to cut, then file the nail smooth, remember to file in one direction to avoid further cracking.

  • Do not attempt to trim the cracked nail if you are still in pain or the nail bed is still sensitive.
  • Do not use regular nail clippers to trim cracked nails. This tool puts a lot of pressure on the nail and can cause the crack to spread.

Keep nails less wet. Nails are more prone to brittleness if they are frequently wet and then dry. Limit the number of times your nails get wet and dry by wearing waterproof shoes on rainy or snowy days. [13] X Research Source

  • However, you can soak your nails for 15 minutes every day, pat dry, then apply a moisturizer (such as emollient products like organic lotion or Vaseline cream) to add moisture to the nails. [14] X Research Source
