Despite the name voodoo, voodoo dolls actually have no historical connection to voodoo rituals. This doll has its roots in magical rituals in Europe. You can use voodoo dolls to cast good and bad spells or make devil-themed decorations. Although pre-made voodoo dolls are also available, it is much better if you make your own. Not only are they cheaper and more fun, DIY dolls also allow you to design whatever you want.

Draw the pattern on the paper and cut it out. Find a anthropomorphic pattern online or draw your own. The doll model does not need to be in the same proportions as the real person. You can make the doll as big or as small as you want, but most voodoo dolls are just about the size of the palm of your hand.

  • If you don’t know how to draw, you can use a gingerbread man-shaped mold to draw along, but remember to make the head bigger and rounder. [1] X Research Source

Pin the pattern to two pieces of felt fabric with a fabric stapler. Pin the needle neatly inside the pattern. If you pin the needle sticking out of the pattern, it will interfere when cutting the fabric. If using a small pattern, you can use a piece of felt. Fold the fabric in half to make two “pieces,” then pin the pattern in place.

  • You can use fabric of any color, from your natural skin tone to green, red, even blue.

Cut the felt fabric according to the pattern and remove the pin. There’s no need to leave a seam, as you’ll be stitching with a different stitch than sewing the garment. Remove the stapler after cutting is complete and set the pattern aside; you don’t need it anymore. [2] X Research Source

Sew a button into one of the two pieces of felt to make the doll’s right eye. Choose one piece of fabric for the front and set the other piece aside. Thread black embroidery thread onto the needle to attach a white buttonhole to the right side of the head. Finish the stitch on the back of the piece of fabric, but don’t rush to cut the thread. [3] X Research Sources

  • If you want more detail, you can cut a small circle of black felt fabric, slightly larger than the button. Place this circle under the button before attaching to the fabric.

{“smallUrl”:”https://www.wikihow.com/images_en/thumb/7/7c/Make-a-Voodoo-Dpl-Step-5-Version-7.jpg/v4-728px-Make-a- Voodoo-Dpl-Step-5-Version-7.jpg”,”bigUrl”:”https://www.wikihow.com/images/thumb/7/7c/Make-a-Voodoo-Dpl-Step-5- Version-7.jpg/v4-728px-Make-a-Voodoo-Dpl-Step-5-Version-7.jpg”,”smallWidth”:460,”smallHeight”:345,”bigWidth”:728,”bigHeight” :546,”licensing”:”<div class=”mw-parser-output”></div>”}
Sew an X for the left eye. Keeping the black embroidery thread intact, sew an X into the left part of the doll’s head for the second eye. You can sew the X slightly larger, smaller, or equal to the right eye. Finish the X stitch on the wrong side of the piece of fabric. Do not cut the thread hastily. [4] X Research Sources

  • You can also sew another button in place of the X. The second button may be the same or different from the first.

Sew a horizontal line to make the mouth. The doll’s mouth is about the same length as the distance between the eyes and is located at the bottom of the head. Pierce the needle up from the wrong side of the fabric, just below the left eye. Pull the thread to the right, then push the needle down again and pull it back to the left. Do not cut the thread right away. [5] X Research Sources

  • Do not pull the thread too tight, or the fabric will wrinkle.

{“smallUrl”:”https://www.wikihow.com/images_en/thumb/7/78/Make-a-Voodoo-Dpl-Step-7-Version-7.jpg/v4-728px-Make-a- Voodoo-Dpl-Step-7-Version-7.jpg”,”bigUrl”:”https://www.wikihow.com/images/thumb/7/78/Make-a-Voodoo-Dpl-Step-7- Version-7.jpg/v4-728px-Make-a-Voodoo-Dpl-Step-7-Version-7.jpg”,”smallWidth”:460,”smallHeight”:345,”bigWidth”:728,”bigHeight” :546,”licensing”:”<div class=”mw-parser-output”></div>”}
Sew 4-5 more vertical stitches to create a sewn-in doll’s mouth. Sew in turn on the doll’s mouth from right to left. Each vertical thread will have to cut through the horizontal thread. Start and end vertical threads just inside the horizontal thread and spaced as evenly as possible. At this point you can tie the knot and cut the thread. [6] X Research Sources

Sew a red felt heart on the left side of the doll’s chest. Cut a red felt heart shape and place it on the left side of the felt piece, similar to the location of the real heart. Thread more black embroidery thread and tie a knot. Pierce the needle from the wrong side of the fabric and sew the heart into the fabric. Finish the stitch on the wrong side of the felt piece. Knot and cut thread. [7] X Research Sources

  • Use the next stitch for neatness. Stab the needle up and down the hem in the shape of a heart, as close to the edge of the fabric as possible.
  • Use a square stitch for a simple look. Stab the needle up through the heart, then down through the felt. Again the needle went up through the heart and then down through the felt. Continue sewing like that.

Sew two pieces of felt fabric together, left side facing in. Thread more black embroidery thread on the needle and tie the knot. Insert the needle up through the left armpit. Pull the thread around the edge of the fabric to the back of the doll and push the needle up through the fabric again, slightly above the first stitch. Just sew the loop around the doll, ending the stitch on the left side of the doll. Leave a gap in the side and drill before cutting the thread. [8] X Research Sources

  • If you want the doll to look more sophisticated, try quilting stitches.
  • You won’t turn the doll inside out after stitching, so keep in mind that the patterned side of the fabric should be on the outside.

Stuff the doll. You can use some cotton ppyester bought at fabric and craft stores. You can also stuff cotton balls with medical grade cotton, but remember to loosen the cotton first to make it more porous.

  • Use the end of the pencil to stuff the doll’s hands and feet.
  • For an authentic voodoo doll, use Spanish moss. [9] X Research Source

Sew the doll. Once you’ve stuffed the doll with your chosen material, sew the gap closed with the same stitch as before. When the loop stitch returns to the left armpit, tie the knot and trim the thread. Your doll is now complete!

Attach a small wooden bead to the neck. Choose a wood grain about 2.5 cm in diameter. Put a drop of glue into the hole of the bead, then thread it around the neck. [13] X Research Source

  • 2.5cm round foam beads can also be used instead of wood beads. [14] X Research Source Punch a hole in the foam beads first, put glue in the hole, then thread the foam beads on the neck.
  • You can use a slightly larger grain of wood, but keep in mind that it will get bigger after you wind the yarn.

Wrap the yarn around the wood grain so that it is completely covered. Use glue to attach one end of the thread to the wood grain. Wind the yarn vertically, horizontally and diagonally until the wood grain is sealed, remembering to change the winding direction often. Secure the end of the yarn with a drop of glue. [15] X Research Source

  • If the head feels too small, keep wrapping. The more loops you wrap, the bigger the doll’s head.
  • You can use yarn of any color. Remember that you will wrap the doll again with embroidery thread to create color.

Wrap the yarn around your legs and upper body. Start wrapping down your left leg, then back up to your hip. Continue wrapping down your right leg and back up again. Wrap up your arms gradually. Once you’re done with the arms, you’ll go back to wrapping your upper body a few more times for a thicker torso. [16] X Research Source

  • For a neater look, you can wrap the yarn around the loops at the hands and feet first, then wrap the rest around the legs and arms.
  • If using regular wire, you may have to wrap the doll several times; otherwise the doll will be too skinny.

Add color and clothes with embroidery thread. You can leave the doll as it is or wrap it again with embroidery thread. This step will create thickness, shape and color for the doll. Wrap the embroidery thread with the same technique as yarn winding. Consider using different colors for the head and body. If you like, you can also make “shirt” and “pants” for the doll. [17] X Research Source

  • To add a bit of texture, you can wrap the embroidery thread from your left shoulder down to your right armpit, then over your right shoulder and down to your left armpit. Wrap a few loops like this to form an X shape.
