This wikiHow teaches you how to register a Google Voice phone number. You can sign up for a free Google Voice phone number if you have a Google Account. You can also delete your current Google Voice number and choose a new one, but it will take up to 90 days after deleting the number before you can choose a new one. Note that Google Voice is only available to users in the US, so you’ll need to change your computer’s IP address to the US.

Sign up for Google Voice

Open Google Voice. Go to https://voice.google.com using a web browser on your computer. The Google Voice setup page opens if you’re signed in with your Google account.

  • If you’re not signed in to your Google account, enter your email address and password before continuing.
Find location. Click the text box in the center of the page, then enter a city name or ZIP code (eg 96703 ). As you type, a drop-down menu with phone number options will appear below the text frame.
Select phone number. Click the blue SELECT button to the right of the phone number you want to use.

Click VERIFY (Verify). This blue button is in the middle of the page. Your real phone number verification page will appear.
Enter your real phone number. In the text box in the center of the page, enter a phone number on a phone that you can access.
Click SEND CODE . The action is located in the lower right corner of the phone number window. Google Voice will send a verification text to your phone.
Get code. Open the messaging app on your phone, open a message from Google (usually a five-digit number) and view the six-digit code in the text of the message.

  • Google messages often have something like “123456 is your Google Voice verification code” (123456 is your Google Voice verification code).
Insert code. Enter the six-digit code in the data field in the middle of the Google Voice page.
Click VERIFY in the lower right corner of the confirmation window.
Click CLAIM (Request) when it appears. This will confirm that you want to link the phone number to your Google Voice account.

  • Depending on your phone number, this action may not appear. In this case you just keep going.
Click FINISH when it appears. Once the phone number is confirmed, your Google Voice page will appear.

Get a new phone number

Open Google Voice. Go to https://voice.google.com using a web browser on your computer. The Google Voice setup page opens if you’re signed in with your Google account.

Click DELETE . Actions are near the top of the page, to the bottom right of your Google Voice phone number. The Legacy page will appear.
Click the Delete link next to the Google Voice number on the Legacy page.

Click Proceed when it appears. Your Google Voice number will be removed from your Google Account.
