Movie vs. Reality: The Real Story of the Von Trapp Family [1]
I first saw the movie The Sound of Music as a young child, probably in the late 1960s. I liked the singing, and Maria was so pretty and kind! As I grew older, more aware of world history, and saturated by viewing the movie at least once yearly, I was struck and annoyed by the somewhat sanitized story of the von Trapp family it told, as well as the bad 1960s hairdos and costumes
In the early 1970s I saw Maria von Trapp herself on Dinah Shore’s television show, and boy, was she not like the Julie Andrews version of Maria! She didn’t look like Julie, and she came across as a true force of nature. In thinking about the fictionalized movie version of Maria von Trapp as compared to this very real Maria von Trapp, I came to realize that the story of the von Trapp family was probably something closer to human, and therefore much more interesting, than the movie led me to believe.
When they fled the Nazi regime in Austria, the von Trapps traveled to America. Their entry into the United States and their subsequent applications for citizenship are documented in the holdings of the National Archives and Records Administration.
The Sound of Music [2]
|Basis||Maria von Trapp’s autobiography The Story of the Trapp Family Singers|. The Sound of Music is a musical with music by Richard Rodgers, lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II, and a book by Howard Lindsay and Russel Crouse
Set in Austria on the eve of the Anschluss in 1938, the musical tells the story of Maria, who takes a job as governess to a large family while she decides whether to become a nun. She falls in love with the children, and eventually their widowed father, Captain von Trapp
He and Maria decide on a plan to flee Austria with the children. Many songs from the musical have become standards, including “Do-Re-Mi”, “My Favorite Things”, “Edelweiss”, “Climb Ev’ry Mountain”, and the title song “The Sound of Music”.

Maria was born on 26 January 1905 to Augusta (née Rainer) and Karl Kutschera.[8] She was delivered on a train heading from her parents’ village in Tyrol to a hospital in Vienna, Austria.[6]. Her father, grief-stricken, left Maria with his cousin (her foster mother) who had cared for Maria’s half-brother after his mother died
Her foster mother’s son-in-law, Uncle Franz, then became her guardian.[9]. Uncle Franz did not treat Maria well and punished her for things she did not do
The Sound of Music (film) [4]
The Sound of Music is a 1965 American musical drama film produced and directed by Robert Wise, and starring Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer, with Richard Haydn, Peggy Wood, Charmian Carr, and Eleanor Parker. The film is an adaptation of the 1959 stage musical, composed by Richard Rodgers, with lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II
Based on the 1949 memoir The Story of the Trapp Family Singers by Maria von Trapp, the film is about a young Austrian postulant who, in 1938, is sent to the villa of a retired naval officer and widower to be governess to his seven children.[4]. Filming took place from March to September 1964 in Los Angeles and Salzburg
Although initial critical response to the film was mixed, it was a major commercial success, becoming the number one box office film after four weeks, and the highest-grossing film of 1965. By November 1966, The Sound of Music had become the highest-grossing film of all-time—surpassing Gone with the Wind—and held that distinction for five years

‘The Sound of Music’: The von Trapp Family Had 3 More Kids Who Were Not Shown in the Movie. The Sound of Music is a classic family movie that is loved by many generations
Although The Sound of Music is based on the true story of the real-life von Trapp family, the film features some inaccuracies. For example, the real-life von Trapp family actually had 10 kids, not seven
As shown in the movie, the von Trapp family was headed by former naval captain Georg von Trapp. After his first wife died, he was left widowed with seven kids

What Happened to the Von Trapp Family Children? [7]
Like many people, I was just a kid when I first saw this classic movie. It’s true that it’s a sickly-sweet film – the oldies loved it – but nevertheless it had its own charm for kids
Now of course, we know that the story was only very loosely based on the real von Trapp family and one of the interesting differences was that there weren’t seven children as the movie showed, but ten in total. Maria and the captain had three children after their marriage
You remember (of course you do) the dramatic scene in The Sound Of Music when the family escape from Austria in 1938? Well, in reality the seven performing ‘children’ were aged between seventeen and twenty seven – there was not a cute kid to be seen.. As for the other three non-performing children, Rosmarie was nine, Eleonore was seven and Johannes wasn’t yet born
The von Trapps: The Real Family That Inspired ‘The Sound of Music’ [8]
When The Sound of Music debuted on cinema screens in April 1965, audiences fell hard and in huge numbers for the joyous celebration of music, dance, patriotism and familial and romantic love, propelling it to become one of the world’s most beloved movie musicals and turning the story of the von Trapp family into lore.. Like many true stories filtered through Hollywood’s often overly sentimental lens, The Sound of Music on-screen differs significantly from the true tale of Maria, the novice nun who takes a job as a governess in the Austrian household of the von Trapps, only to find herself falling in love with widower and retired naval captain Georg von Trapp and his seven children.
A cinematic recreation of the 1959 Broadway musical featuring music and lyrics by Richard Rogers and Oscar Hammerstein, the Robert Wise-directed movie is based on the early chapters of Maria’s 1949 memoir, The Story of the Trapp Family Singers, which chronicles Maria and the von Trapp’s beginnings in Salzburg, Austria, through their escape from Nazi-occupied Europe to the family’s eventual relocation to America.. To use lyrics from “Do-Re-Mi,” when it comes to alterations and omissions contained in the movie version of The Sound of Music, “let’s start at the very beginning.”
She attended teachers’ college where she discovered religion and converted to Catholicism before becoming a candidate for the novitiate in Salzburg. Portrayed on film by Andrews as demure and self-effacing, the real Maria was in fact a real problem while at the convent, describing herself as “horrid, the worst you can imagine,” in a 1980 article which includes a list of transgressions such as breaking china, speaking during periods of silence, running in the courtyard, whistling Gregorian chants and climbing on the convent roof.
