List of Foreigner band members [1]
Foreigner is a British-American rock band from New York City and London. Formed in 1976, the group originally included lead vocalist Lou Gramm, lead guitarist and keyboardist and vocalist Mick Jones, rhythm guitarist and woodwind player Ian McDonald, bassist Ed Gagliardi, drummer Dennis Elliott, and keyboardist Al Greenwood.
Foreigner was formed in April 1976 by former Leslie West Band guitarist Mick Jones, with the original lineup also including former Black Sheep vocalist Lou Gramm, former King Crimson keyboardist and woodwind player Ian McDonald, bassist Ed Gagliardi, former Ian Hunter drummer Dennis Elliott, and keyboardist Al Greenwood.[2] After two albums – 1977’s Foreigner and 1978’s Double Vision – Gagliardi left the band in April 1979 and was replaced by Rick Wills, formerly of Small Faces.[3] Following the release and promotion of 1979’s Head Games, McDonald and Greenwood were fired in September 1980.[4] The group remained a quartet and released 4 in 1981.[5] For the album’s promotional tour, McDonald’s vacated spot was taken by Mark Rivera, while Bob Mayo and Peter Reilich performed live keyboards.[4] Foreigner’s lineup remained the same for Agent Provocateur and Inside Information, before Gramm announced his departure from the band in May 1990 due to differences with Jones and to focus on his solo career.[6]. Jones replaced Gramm with Johnny Edwards, formerly of Montrose, Buster Brown, King Kobra, and Wild Horses, who contributed to the group’s next album, Unusual Heat.[7] Keyboardist Jeff Jacobs joined after the album’s release.[8] The Unusual Heat touring cycle was the last for Elliott, who left the band in 1993.[9] The drummer had ceased working with the group in 1991, with Larry Aberman filling in on tour, before Mark Schulman joined in early 1992 in time to perform on three new tracks for The Very Best ..
Moonlight touring cycle, Gilman left Foreigner and Gimbel returned in his place.[12] Around the same time, in January 1995, Schulman was replaced by Ron Wikso on drums.[14] The group continued touring, but did not release any new material before Brian Tichy replaced Wikso in April 1998.[15][16] Schulman returned for a second stint in 2000, before Denny Carmassi took over in time for the group’s 25th anniversary tour in 2002.[17] After the tour ended in early 2003, Gramm and Turgon left Foreigner, and the band was put on hiatus for over a year.[18] Jones, now the sole remaining original member of the group, reformed Foreigner for a one-off charity show in July 2004 with a lineup including Gimbel and Jacobs, plus vocalist Chas West, bassist Jeff Pilson and drummer Jason Bonham.[19][20] Early the following year, the group reformed on a permanent basis, adding new frontman Kelly Hansen in place of West.[21] The group’s lineup remained stable until December 2007, when long-time member Jacobs left.[8]. Jacobs was replaced for Foreigner’s final shows of 2007 by Paul Mirkovich,[22] who later made way for Michael Bluestein in early 2008.[23] Bonham also left in August 2008,[24] to be replaced briefly by Bryan Head and later by the returning Tichy.[25][26] Foreigner released its first studio album in 15 years, Can’t Slow Down, in 2009.[27] After the subsequent touring cycle, Jason Sutter took over from Tichy in May 2010,[28] although within a year he had been replaced by Schulman.[29] During a tour in 2011, Jones was unable to perform a number of shows due to undisclosed reasons; he was replaced by Joel Hoekstra and later Bruce Watson for select dates, the latter of whom remained a full-time member of the group.[30] Schulman left again in August 2012, with Tichy filling in before Chris Frazier’s arrival the next month.[26][31]
Lou Gramm [2]
This biography of a living person needs additional citations for verification. Louis Andrew Grammatico (born 2 May 1950), known professionally as Lou Gramm, is an American singer-songwriter, best known as the lead singer of the rock band Foreigner from 1977 to 1990 and again from 1992 to 2003, during which time the band had numerous successful albums and singles.
Black Sheep was the first American band signed to the Chrysalis label, which released their first single, “Stick Around” (1974). Soon after this initial bit of success, Black Sheep signed with Capitol Records, releasing two albums in succession: Black Sheep (1975) and Encouraging Words (late 1975)
Unable to support its albums with live performances, Black Sheep disbanded.[5]. A year earlier, Gramm met his future bandmate Mick Jones

Foreigner’s original recording lineup comprised Gagliardi, vocalist Lou Gramm, guitarist Mick Jones, keyboardist Al Greenwood, drummer Dennis Elliott, and multi-instrumentalist Ian McDonald

Foreigner Biography, Songs, & Albums [6]
Built around the songwriting skills and fiery guitar riffing of Mick Jones and the arena-filling vocals of Lou Gramm, Foreigner’s hooky style of AOR caught on in a big way in the late ’70s. Their first two albums — 1977’s Foreigner and 1978’s Double Vision — were a double shot of exceedingly catchy songs and slick production that topped the charts and spawned a number of huge singles
The band’s leader from the beginning was British guitarist Mick Jones, who first broke into the music biz as a hired gun of sorts, appearing on recordings by George Harrison and Peter Frampton, and as part of a latter-day version of hard rockers Spooky Tooth. By the mid-’70s, Jones relocated to New York City, where he was briefly a member of the Leslie West Band and served as an A&R man for a record company
Jones soon assembled a group consisting of ex-King Crimson sax player Ian McDonald and ex-Ian Hunter drummer Dennis Elliot (both of whom were British), along with New York musicians Al Greenwood (keyboards), Ed Gagliardi (bass), and Lou Gramm (vocals), the latter of whom was previously a member of an obscure ’70s outfit called Black Sheep. Jones found immediate songwriting chemistry with Gramm (one of the first songs they wrote together was the eventual hit “Cold as Ice”), resulting in the newly formed band taking the name Foreigner and signing a recording contract with Atlantic Records
How Foreigner’s Current and Old Members Overcame Hesitant Start [7]
How Foreigner’s Mix of Current and Old Members Overcame Hesitant Start. Foreigner singer Kelly Hansen admitted that the process of current members working with the people they replaced had a “hesitant” start, but said it had turned out to be a positive experience.
The idea had come up after Jones and former singer Gramm had settled their longstanding differences.. “You’d think it would be really odd,” Hansen told Rock Talk With Mitch Lafon
And they were really cool and really open and really giving and really trusting. And everyone just came in and we just did our thing, and it, surprisingly, worked out really, really well, and we have a good time together
Radio Swiss Pop [8]
Foreigner is a British-American rock band,[1] originally formed in 1976 by veteran English musician Mick Jones and fellow Briton and ex-King Crimson member Ian McDonald along with American vocalist Lou Gramm.. Jones came up with the band’s name as he, McDonald and Dennis Elliott were English, while Gramm, Al Greenwood and Ed Gagliardi were American.[2][3] Their biggest hit single, “I Want to Know What Love Is”, topped the UK and US Charts among others
Since its inception, Foreigner has been led by English musician Mick Jones (former member of Nero and the Gladiators, Johnny Hallyday’s band, Spooky Tooth and The Leslie West Band). After the collapse of the Leslie West Band, Jones found himself stranded in NYC where West’s manager, Bud Prager, took him under his wing and encouraged Jones to continue his songwriting and rehearse a band of his own in a space Prager had near his New York office
Another friend, Stories singer Ian Lloyd, was brought in to sing but Jones decided the chemistry was not quite right and retained only Greenwood as he renewed his search for players. During a session for Ian Lloyd’s album, Jones met up with transplanted Englishman and ex-King Crimson member Ian McDonald and another session for Ian Hunter unearthed another fellow Brit in drummer Dennis Elliott
Foreigner [9]
Foreigner is a British-American rock band,[1] originally formed in 1976 by veteran English musician Mick Jones and fellow Briton and ex-King Crimson member Ian McDonald along with American vocalist Lou Gramm. Foreigner are one of the world’s best-selling bands of all time with worldwide sales of nearly 80 million albums,[2] including 37.5 million albums in the United States alone.
Jones came up with the name from the fact that no matter what country they were in, three would be foreigners, because he, McDonald and Elliott were English, while Gramm, Greenwood and Gagliardi were Americans.[]. The band’s debut album, Foreigner, was released in March 1977 and sold more than four million copies in the United States, staying in the Top 20 for a year with such hits as “Feels Like the First Time”, “Cold as Ice” and “Long, Long Way from Home”.
Album number three, Head Games (September 1979), which was referred to by Gramm as their “grainiest” album, was also successful because of the thunderous “Dirty White Boy” and another title track hit “Head Games”. For Head Games, bassist Ed Gagliardi was replaced by Englishman Rick Wills.
What do the band Foreigner and ‘Nightmare on Elm Street 3’ have in common? [10]
Twenty-six years before Jeff Pilson joined the rock band Foreigner, the band played one of his instruments onstage.. In 1978, Pilson – who in the mid ‘80s would find success with Los Angeles hard-rock band Dokken – was living in Seattle and playing bass in a progressive-rock band called Christmas.
A Mellotron was an early synthesizer that used interchangeable analog-tape recording-samples of different instruments, such as strings, to impart orchestral sounds. In addition to prog bands, The Beatles famously used a Mellotron on the Fab Four’s 1967 psych-pop hit “Strawberry Fields Forever.” Led Zeppelin bassist John Paul Jones played one on live versions of Zep’s Middle East-tinged rock-epic “Kashmir.”
Then one day someone from that music store called Pilson on the phone. “They said, ‘Hey, Foreigner is coming to the stadium here and they called us trying to find a Mellotron,’” Pilson recalls
Foreigner [11]
With 10 multi-platinum albums and 16 Top 30 hits, FOREIGNER is universally hailed as one of the most popular rock acts in the world with a formidable musical arsenal that continues to propel sold-out tours and album sales, now exceeding 80 million.. Responsible for some of rock and roll’s most enduring anthems including “Juke Box Hero,” “Cold As Ice,” “Hot Blooded,” “Waiting For A Girl Like You,” “Feels Like The First Time,” “Urgent,” “Head Games,” “Say You Will,” “Dirty White Boy,” “Long, Long Way From Home” and the worldwide #1 hit, “I Want To Know What Love Is,” FOREIGNER still rocks the charts more than 40 years into the game with massive airplay and continued Billboard Top 200 album success
With more Top 10 songs than Journey and as many as Fleetwood Mac, FOREIGNER also features strongly in every category in Billboard’s “Greatest of All Time” listing. At times, the band’s weekly catalog sales have eclipsed those of Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, the Rolling Stones, the Who, Def Leppard, Van Halen, Aerosmith and most of their Classic Rock peers (Source: Nielsen SoundScan)

Foreigner singer Kelly Hansen says getting back on the road has been a long time coming [13]
Foreigner singer Kelly Hansen says getting back on the road has been a long time coming. Foreigner started with a few small shows to “make sure the gears were greased” before embarking on a months-long tour that will run into 2022.
For Kelly Hansen, the band’s lead singer since 2005, they’re more than ready to get back on the road.. “It came to a point where we said it’s time, it’s time for us to try to get out there and see if we can do it,” Hansen said in an interview
The members started with a few small shows to “make sure the gears were greased,” Hansen said, before embarking on a months-long tour that will run into 2022, when they head to Europe.. And much like the band members, concertgoers have been waiting for more than a year to get back in the stands.

Ian McDonald, founding member of King Crimson and Foreigner, has died [15]
The English multi-instrumentalist Ian McDonald died Wednesday at age 75. He was a founding member of prog-rock titans King Crimson and the hugely popular Foreigner.
McDonald first came to renown as an original member of King Crimson, which was founded in January 1969. By July of that year, the band appeared with the Rolling Stones in a concert in Hyde Park, and released its debut album, In the Court of the Crimson King, that October
The opening track, “21st Century Schizoid Man,” featured McDonald blazing on his saxophone.. By that December, however, the original band had broken up, and McDonald had departed; he and a fellow King Crimson musician, drummer Michael Giles, formed a duo which released one album
Feels like the first time for Foreigner’s Kelly Hansen [16]
Even though he’s been belting out their greatest hits since 2005, Kelly Hansen still deals with people asking if he feels like a full-fledged member of the classic British-American rock band Foreigner.. “I’ve experienced every phase of what being in a band entails: touring, writing songs, creating new music and recording, making videos and hundreds of live performances,” the 61-year-old Hansen told The Jerusalem Post last week from his home in California.
Hansen was alluding to the veiled criticism sporadically hurled at the band for continuing to tour and record without any of its original members on board. Founding guitarist Mick Jones, the only member who enjoyed the band’s late 1970s-1980s heyday as one of rock’s most popular acts, has remained an on-again, off-again element due to various health issues over the last several years
It’s an issue that has become prevalent for the rockers of the last century as original members retire or die – is it legitimate for replacement members to carry on in the band’s name? For Hansen, it’s totally legit.. “All I can do is what feels right for me and the band, and Mick feels the same way

Since their inception in 1976, the Anglo-American band Foreigner has established itself as one of the premiere rock groups to have emerged from the late 1970s music scene. In the United States alone, the band’s sales have exceeded 30 million albums and singles.
Some of the many artists who have opened for Foreigner over the globe throughout the years have included Bryan Adams, the Cars, Cheap Trick, the Ramones, and Billy Squier. All of these accomplishments were achieved despite the fact that many music critics derided Foreigner as “formulaic” in their mass-market appeal and solely concerned with the creation of nondescript, crassly commercial arena rock.

Ian McDonald, Founding Member of Foreigner and King Crimson, Dies at 75 [21]
Ian McDonald, a multi-instrumentalist who was part of the founding lineups of the art-rock group King Crimson in the late 1960s and the more commercial Foreigner in the mid-’70s, died Wednesday at age 75. No cause of death was immediately given but a spokesperson said he “passed away peacefully” surrounded by family at his home in New York City.
“I’m quite proud of the fact that the two bands I was a founding member of, King Crimson and Foreigner, are still out there playing,” McDonald said in a 2020 interview with Sound & Vision, even though he had little interest in reunions or rejoining the current iterations of those groups. McDonald, original Foreigner singer Lou Gramm and some other original members did come back together to play some 40th anniversary shows commemorating the 40th anniversary of that band’s 1977 debut.
“Because I didn’t play guitar at all on the ‘In the Court of the Crimson King’ album, sometimes, people are surprised that I do play guitar,” he told Sound & Vision. “Songs like ‘The Court of the Crimson King’ and ‘I Talk to the Wind’ were actually composed on guitar, but I don’t have a guitar credit on the album since I didn’t play guitar on the album.”
