If you’re here it’s because you need some good ways to get rid of a hickey. So you got too close in the heat of the moment, and now you’ve got a big hickey that you can’t seem to cover… well, hickeys can take a while to heal, because they are caused by the blood vessels close to the skin breaking, and the blood escaping to cause a bright red mark. Fear not, though! Here’s how to get rid of a hickey!
This works best if you do it as soon as the hickey has been made, but will work up to a few hours later. The ice will freeze the blood vessels, preventing blood from rushing into your hickey, and minimizing the mark. Ice is one of the quickest ways to hide a hickey.
Stimulating the area will cause the blood to disperse, and take most of the color out of the hickey. The outline may remain, though, depending on how severe it is! Do a few five-minute sessions of gently rubbing and massaging the area, and it should begin to disappear.
Similar to massage, this works because it disperses blood. The ‘fingers’ of the comb will force blood back into the vessels, though, and teamed with massage, this can completely remove the hickey. Be careful not to break your skin, though! It might be one of the weirdest ways to get rid of a hickey, but it really works!
Find an object that is tubular, with a domed end, such as a lipstick cap. Apply this to the hickey with moderate pressure, and twist. This will hurt, but will force blood back under the skin and make the hickey much less obvious.
Find some vitamin K liquid or cream, often found in Chemists, and rub it into the area several times a day. This is a slower method but will help you naturally get rid of that hickey.
Use a moist, used tea bag as a warm compress, repeating as often as necessary until the hickey disappears. Make sure you are wearing an old t-shirt, though, as the tea might drip or leak onto it. This is one of my favorite ways to get remove a hickey.
Place a spoon in the freezer for a few minutes, and then apply to the hickey. Make sure the spoon covers the whole mark, or you could be left with an oddly shaped hickey!
I use this straight after the spoons, to instantly get rid of any hickey. If you have a microwavable blanket, you can use this, or soak a cloth in hot water, rinse and apply to the hickey. Be careful not to burn yourself!
This might not be a cure, but it’s a good temporary solution! Apply a thin layer of face powder, and then apply concealer, remembering to blend well. Apply another sprinkling of powder to ensure it stays put.
This is one of the strangest answers for how to hide a hickey, but it works. Buy a tin of tuna and oil, and put a coating of this over the hickey. Leave this for about ten minutes, and then use a hair dryer to heat the tuna for about five minutes. Wash it all off, and the hickey should be disappearing before your eyes!
Toothpaste is one of easiest ways to get rid of a hickey and the sooner you apply it, the better it works! Grab some mint toothpaste and apply a layer to the affected area. It’ll probably tingle since it contains mint and it’s breaking up the blood vessels. After a few minutes, take a towel soaked in warm water and gently remove the toothpaste. If it doesn’t work the first time, wait at least a day before you try again as it can be harmful to your skin if done excessively.
This is another one of the more painful hickey removal methods, but it does work. Place your fingers around the love bite and stretch your skin out as much as safely possible. Grab the largest coin you can find and rub the edge of it on the red areas for a couple of minutes. It’ll be uncomfortable, but by rubbing the coin’s edge on your skin is helping to spread the blood so there’s less color. Redness from rubbing the coin should disappear within 15 minutes.
This trick works similar to the comb, but you can also use a toothbrush or a hairbrush instead. It might be a little uncomfortable, but “brushing” the hickey with a toothbrush or hairbrush will help the blood circulate and fade faster.
Arnica Salve is a healing ointment made from the Arnica plant. It helps decrease bruises and swelling as well as reducing aches and pains. This cream helps reduce redness and repair broken capillaries in the skin thereby making the hickey much less noticeable.
Another thing you can do right after you get a hickey is to take either an aspirin, ibuprofen or acetaminophen. While this trick won’t totally remove the hickey, it’ll help with the pain and keep the blood platelets from adhering which reduces blood clots making the love bite not as obvious.
Taking some extended-release vitamin C or drinking some fresh orange juice is another way to help heal your hickey. Vitamin C is a nutrient that our bodies require in order to repair itself and is key to the production of collagen. Collagen helps our bodies produce blood vessels and cells making our skin more strong and firm. And that’s why this is one of the best ways to remove a hickey.
You know how some people swear by using Preparation H for puffy eyes? Turns out that there are quite a few people who like to use the cream to get rid of hickeys, also! Since it’s made to restrict blood vessels and is an anti-inflammatory, it can be helpful in trying to get rid of or at least better conceal the love bite!
Hickeys can be a nightmare when you have to go out, and wearing a turtleneck or a scarf isn’t an option, so I’m so glad there are real, effective solutions! If you can, always remember to apply ice as soon as possible, and be careful where you are biting! Then if the hickey doesn’t go away, you can at least pretend you burnt yourself with straighteners! Have you got a way to get rid of hickeys? Please let me know!
