12 Best Press-On Nail Sets for a DIY Manicure, Tested and Reviewed for 2023
Sry, can’t talk. I’m taking hand selfies.
I’ll be honest: I totally f*ck with press-on nails. Not only are they cheaper, easier, and faster to do than traditional manicures, but today’s fake nails are also so realistic that they’ve tricked pretty much everyone around me into thinking they’re polish. Don’t get me wrong, I still love the pampering of getting a *regular* manicure in an actual salon, but I dread the removal process (see: tons of nail polish remover). So when I want an at-home manicure lasts without chipping, or flaking, or requiring the steady hand of an art major, I go for press-on nails every time.
That being said, some press-on nail sets legitimately…suck. Which is why I’ve not only tested a dozen press-on nails at home to give you a totally honest and real review, but I’ve also enlisted the help and expertise of celebrity manicurist, Julie Kandalec (a press-on nail stan) to fill us in on everything we need to know about press-on nails, below.
✔️ FYI: We updated this article in January 2023 to give you the most up-to-date info on press-on nails, including several we personally tested, a manicurist’s take on how to apply them, and how to choose the best set of press-on nails for yourself.

So, since I’ve become the unofficial expert—and consulted an actual expert—on all things fake nails in 2023, let’s get to the fun part: The 12 best press-on nails, ranging from drugstore to expensive, along with how to choose the best set, how to apply them like a pro, and more.
How do you apply press-on nails?
How do you apply press-on nails?
Applying press-on nails is a relatively simple task, however, there are a few important tips to ensuring your fake nail look as ~real~ as possible. Kandalec breaks it down for us:
- Trim or file your natural nails shorter so the tips adhere better and don’t show before you apply your press-ons.
- Wash your hands with soap and water, remove all nail polish, lightly buff your nails to improve adhesion, and prep your nails with 91 percent isopropyl alcohol.
- Match the press-on nail to your nail bed size and—this is key, curvature. Be sure the nail doesn’t have to be pressed down to fit, or it will pop off prematurely!
- Shape each nail to fit on all sides of your nail bed with a nail file. This is very important if you want a long-lasting set.
- Cover your entire nail with glue or an adhesive tab one at a time.
- Align the press-on nail along the cuticle line, apply at a downward angle from the cuticle, and press down firmly for 20 to 30 seconds. If any glue seeps from the sides, remove it right away with a cuticle stick.

What fake nails stay on the longest?
The key to ensuring your fake nails stay on a long time is to make sure they fit correctly. “Using a nail that doesn’t fit the arch, aka apex, of your nail will make it pop off too soon—if it even lasts,” says Kandalec. She recommends sizing up the actual nail and tapering the sides down to fit.
As mentioned earlier, “always make sure you clean your nails with 91 percent alcohol before applying your press-ons and add a healthy amount of nail adhesive to your nails to make them last longer.” With good application and proper care, press-ons can last up to two weeks, explains Kandalec, adding that they normally last anywhere from five to ten days.

Choose the style
The best press-on nail sets depend on what nail shape and style you’re going for (i.e., coffin nails, stiletto nails, short nails, long nails, etc.) and how well you want the fake nails to actually “stick” to your real nails. If you’re looking for a non-committal option and easy removal, a glue-less nail with an adhesive back is a great option. However, I’d be remiss not to warn you that these kinds of press-on nails can easily fall off. So, if you don’t necessarily want to walk around with half a set of nails, I’d purchase the ones that require nail glue.
Know how to properly remove them
If you go the glue nail route, you should understand that the removal process can damage your nails, similar to the acrylics, dip powder, and gel you get at the salon. “Always make sure to remove your press-on nails correctly; improper removal—like ripping them off—can lead to long-lasting, brittle nails,” says Kandalec. When it’s time to remove them, follow these steps to prevent as much damage as possible:
- Soak your nails in warm soapy water for 10 to 15 minutes. If they are reusable nails, avoid acetone, as it can destroy them.
- Use a wood cuticle pusher if you want to reuse the nails, or a metal cuticle pusher if they’re for one-time use, and gently lift the press-on up from around your nailbed and cuticles.
- Continue soaking your nails if they are not budging. Repeat this process until they all come off—buff off any excess glue left over.
- Apply a cuticle oil and an optional nail strengthener to treat your nails after removal.
